Indonesia Awards Solarex Contract to Build 36,400 Home PV Systems

Solarex, a business unit of Amoco and Enron Solar, will provide photovoltaic systems to power 36,400 rural Indonesian homes, according to International Solar Energy Intelligence Report. Each 50-watt Solarex module and battery unit will provide enough power for light fixtures, a television, and a small radio, the article said. The three-year, $25-million electrification project profiled in the report is designed to bring electricity to that portion of Indonesia's population, the world's fifth largest, that will probably never be connected to the national power grid. The story noted that Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago, with 6,000 of its 13,500 islands presently inhabited.
